1. Get a copy of your contract
Question & Answer
I want to cancel my cellphone contract. What should I know? Before you cancel your cellphone service, you should get a copy of your contract. Your contract will say if you have to pay a cancellation fee.
If you do not have a copy of your contract, your service provider must give you one. You only have to ask them for a copy. You can do this in person or by calling your service provider. You can ask for a paper copy or an electronic copy.
If they refuse to give you a copy, you can complain to the Commission for Complaints for Telecom-television Services (CCTS).
Check if you have to pay a cancellation fee
There are rules about when a service provider can charge a cancellation fee, and how much they can charge.
If there is an early cancellation fee, this must be clearly stated in your contract. Your contract must tell you how to calculate what the fee will be. It must also tell you what date you will no longer have to pay a cancellation fee.
Many cellphone contracts have cancellation fees that get smaller every month you remain in the contract. If this is the case, then your contract must tell you how much the fee goes down every month.
If your contract is not clear, you can complain to the Commission for Complaints for Telecom-television Services (CCTS).
