4. Keep a record of what happened

If you have a camera or cell phone, you can try and take photos or video of the police searching your home or business. The police may not let you, but there is no authority for them to prevent you from taking photos or videos of them executing their duties in public, or at a location lawfully controlled by you. Also take photos or video of any damage to your property caused by the police during their search.

As soon as possible, write down notes. The closer to the date of the incident, the fresher your memory will be.

Write down:

  • the date when you made your notes
  • any items seized by the police
  • what the police said
  • what the police did
  • what happened to you
