1. Think about the type of adoption you want

In Ontario there are 3 ways you can place a child for adoption.

Whichever way you choose, you cannot be pressured to place your child for adoption.

Type of adoption

Public adoption

Public adoption means placing your child for adoption through the (CAS).

When you contact your local CAS, they will talk to you about your options and help you decide if public adoption is right for you and your child.

Private adoption

Private adoption means placing your child for adoption through a government-approved agency or person.

When you contact them, an adoption counsellor will talk to you over the phone or meet with you to answer your questions and explain how private adoptions work.

Family adoption

Family adoption is sometimes called relative or step-parent adoption. It means placing your child with a family member.

The family member can be your child’s step-parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, great-aunt, or great-uncle. They must apply to court if they want to adopt your child.

If you are under 18 years old

If you are under 18 years old, you still have the right to decide whether or not you want to place your child for adoption. The Office of the Children’s Lawyer will meet with you to make sure you understand your choices and that you are not being pressured to place your child for adoption.
