Learn what your options are if you have children

If you stopped paying into the CPP because you stayed home with a child

If you don’t have enough pension credits because you were raising a child under 7 years old during your contributory period, you might be able to use what’s called the “child-rearing provision”.  You can do this if raising your child meant you:

  • stopped working and didn’t contribute, or
  • contributed less than the minimum required to CPP

To do this, you need to complete the Child Rearing Provision form.

This might help you qualify for or increase the amount of your benefits.

If you have dependent children

If you’re getting CPP disability benefits, your children may also be able to get monthly payments from the CPP. To be eligible, a child must be dependent, which means that they’re:

  • under 18 years old, or
  • under 25 and a full-time student.

For example, in 2019, children could get around $250 a month.

To apply, you have to fill out the Child Rearing Provision form and include it with your application for CPP disability benefits.
