2. Start the adoption process that is right for you
Question & AnswerHow do I adopt a child in Ontario?
Think about the different ways you can adopt and choose the one that is right for you.
When choosing an adoption agency or adoption worker you can ask for references from families they have worked with. Call and talk to families who have used their services. Talking to other families who have recently adopted a child can also help you decide what is best for you.
If you are interested in a public adoption, contact your local . They may have information sessions about how to apply to be an adoptive parent.
They will ask you to fill out an application form. They will also connect you with an adoption worker who will help you through the process.
If you are interested in a private adoption, contact an adoption agency or person approved by the Ministry of Children and Youth Services. They usually ask you to come in for an interview to start the process.
If you are interested in an international adoption, choose the country you want to adopt from. Then find and contact an adoption agency or person that helps people adopt from that country.
Make sure the agency or worker is approved by the Ministry of Children and Youth Services. They may also need to be approved by the country you would like to adopt from.
If you are interested in a family adoption and the child lives in Ontario, apply to the Ontario Court of Justice or the Family Court Branch of the Superior Court of Justice. The Superior Court of Justice does not deal with adoption matters.
You need to fill out a Form 34D: Affidavit of Adoption Applicant(s). This form asks for details about:
- your relationship with the child
- your relationship with the child’s parents
- your education, employment, and health background
- your ability to support and care for the child
