Find out if you should get paid for training
Question & Answer
Should I be paid for training or for working a trial shift? You don’t have to be paid if you’re:
- a student in a college or university program who is doing a job placement
- a high school student who is doing a placement for credit, for example in a co-op program
But in most cases, if you’re being trained on the job, your employer has to pay you.
For example, if you’re being trained by your employer in a skill that’s used by the employer’s workers, you have the right to be paid. This applies even if the employer calls it an “internship”.
Check to see if the work you’re doing is covered by the Employment Standards Act. If it is, you may have the right to be paid for your training.
