You have the right to talk to a lawyer. You must make it clear that you want to use your right to talk to a lawyer. You can do this by asking to speak to one.
What the police must do
The police must give you a reasonable opportunity to use your right to counsel. They must stop questioning you until you have talked to a lawyer in private.
The police must give you a reasonable opportunity to contact your lawyer. They must allow you to call your lawyer more than once if there is no answer on the first try. If after several tries you still can’t reach your lawyer, the police must let you talk to a different lawyer. The police must also tell you about the free legal advice available from through Legal Aid Ontario. The police must allow you to talk to your lawyer in private.
