Will peace bonds appear on my criminal record?

There are 3 kinds of police record checks:

• a criminal record check
• a criminal record and judicial matters check
• a vulnerable sector record check

A peace bond won’t appear on your criminal record. It will appear on your criminal record and judicial matters check and vulnerable sector record check for as long as it is in effect. 

Criminal record checks

A peace bond doesn’t appear on your criminal record. And, entering into a peace bond doesn’t give you a criminal record. One of the reasons you may agree to a peace bond is to avoid a criminal record or conviction.

But, be aware if you don’t follow the conditions of your peace bond, you may be charged with a criminal offence. If you’re found guilty, you could go to jail, and get a criminal record.

Criminal record and judicial matters checks and vulnerable sector record checks

Both criminal record and judicial matters checks and vulnerable sector record checks include outstanding entries, such as active peace bonds. Details about active peace bonds are stored on the national Canadian Police Information Computer (CPIC) database. 

While the peace bond is active it is called an outstanding entry. The police can access this information during investigations. They are allowed to arrest anyone who breaks any of the conditions while the peace bond is active.

When the peace bond expires, it should not be included in either a criminal record and judicial matters check or a vulnerable sector record check.

Removal of your peace bond record

A peace bond appears on criminal record and judicial matters checks and vulnerable sector record checks until it expires. Most peace bonds last for 1 year.
