3. File an application with the Tribunal

You start the process by filing an application with the . The Tribunal has an Applicant’s Guide with detailed instructions.

Say what happened

Explain how you were discriminated against by your employer, landlord, representative, or provider. Include details about each time something happened, saying:

  • what happened
  • where things happened
  • when things happened
  • who was involved

Say how it affected you

Include details about things like:

  • loss of income if you were fired or had to take time off
  • cost to find another apartment if you were forced to move out
  • impact on your physical and mental health

Say what you want the Tribunal to do

The Tribunal can order your employer, landlord, union representative, or service provider to do things like:

  • pay you money
  • in rare cases, give you a job
  • in rare cases, give you an apartment
  • change its practices so they follow human rights laws

You can ask for money to cover costs or to replace money that you were forced to spend because of the .

You can also ask for money because of how the discrimination affected you. When your human rights are not respected, this can hurt you. The Tribunal can order you be paid money for the hurt you were caused.

Think about mediation

You have to say on your if you agree to try . This means a Tribunal member meets with you and your employer, landlord, union representative, or service provider to see if you can reach an agreement without going to a hearing.

The Tribunal won’t do mediation unless everyone agrees. And if the mediation doesn’t end with an agreement, you still have the right to a hearing.
