How do I sponsor my spouse or partner if they’re living in Canada?
You may be able to sponsor your or in Canada for status.
You make your sponsorship application to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). IRCC decides if:
- you qualify to be a sponsor
- your spouse or partner is eligible to be sponsored from inside Canada
- your spouse or partner meets the requirements to become a permanent resident, for example, they’re not because of a criminal record
- your marriage or relationship is genuine and not mainly for immigration reasons

To complete your sponsorship application, you and your spouse or partner must:
- fill out all of the required forms, and
- include all of the documents that are on the checklist in your application package.
Make sure that you are using the most recent version of all the forms.
List all family members
In any application for permanent residence, the person applying must list their spouse, common-law partner, and any dependent children and their dependent children.
For example, your spouse or partner must list any dependent children they have. These children will have to do medical exams and background checks for IRCC to decide if they’re . IRCC does this even if the children are not here or not planning to come to Canada.
If the children are not listed or don’t go through the process with IRCC, your spouse or partner:
- might not have the right to sponsor them later
- could be refused permanent resident status
- could lose their permanent resident status in the future
